At 500 to 1 odds, nobody in their right mind would have picked the Vegas hockey team to go to the Stanley Cup in its first year of existence.  But they did.  It would be an even bigger longshot if David beat Goliath somehow…..but he did?  Let’s talk about it in today’s session…..

RIP Doc….

It was such a gloomy day in the local sports world yesterday. We lost one of the truly great ones. Roy Halladay died in a tragic plane crash at the young age of 40. He was not only loved by the fans as the beloved “Doc”, but was one of the greatest pitchers to ever wear the Phillies pinstripes. In 2010, he threw two no-hitters in the same season and one of them was a perfect game! His winning percentage is one of the all time greats and he is a two-time CY Young winner. When the time comes next year to vote on players who should enter the Hall of Fame, his name will certainly rise to the top. He never made it to the World Series, but his perfect game will always stand out to every Phillies fan, including me. It got me thinking about the word “perfect”. Mr. Halladay threw a perfect game once. He is now in a new home which is called perfect – heaven.  In the book of Romans it says:

Romans 12:2 says:

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

When the Bible talks about perfect, there is only one who qualifies – Jesus. We know that. We are so glad that Jesus stepped in for us. Like Roy closing out a game in the ninth, which leaves nothing to chance, Jesus stepped in for us and said “I got this one”. Roy offered a taste of perfection on the diamond. He made not a single mistake against the Marlins.  I would like to think that he is in heaven right now enjoying his time. So many testimonials have flooded in that have spoken so highly of him and the way he always helped everyone. He gave and gave some more until the Lord called him home, when God decided he needed a new ace to start for his team on Wednesday. You will be missed Mr. Halladay, for your incredible work ethic on and off the field. May we remember to redeem the time God has given us in this life. We don’t know when God will make the call to the bullpen for us, but we do know we should be ready when he does. I, for one, am looking forward to playing catch with Roy someday in a field of dreams. I can hear the ump yell it now, “Play Ball!”  You will be deeply missed Roy, deeply missed.
